A good night out starts before you arrive. Whether you are choosing a concert, a festival or a small local event, a few minutes of planning can prevent confusion at the door and make it easier to get your friends together.

Use this checklist before you book. Event rules vary, so the specific listing and organizer instructions should guide your decision.

1. Confirm the date, time and venue

Check the event date carefully, including the year. Separate the start time from any doors-open or check-in time. If the listing gives arrival instructions, build those into your plan.

Confirm the full venue address rather than relying on a familiar venue name. For online events, check the stated time zone and how you will join. If a time zone is missing, ask the organizer before making plans.

2. Choose the right ticket

Read what each ticket type includes. Check whether it refers to a seat, a section, general admission or a particular session. Look for entry conditions and whether everyone in your group needs an individual ticket.

Before paying, review the total displayed price and make sure the date and ticket quantity match your plan. Do not assume two ticket options provide the same experience simply because their names sound similar.

3. Check age requirements and access information

Look for age restrictions, identification requirements and accessibility details. If you need step-free access, seating information or another accommodation, contact the organizer or venue before booking. An unanswered question is a reason to clarify the details, not to guess.

4. Plan your route and your way home

Choose how you will get to the venue and return afterward. Allow time for the journey, queues and check-in. Check transit schedules or parking instructions close to the event date, as these can change.

Share a meeting point with your friends. A simple group message with the event link, arrival time and venue address is often more useful than a long discussion about the whole evening.

5. Read the terms and keep your confirmation

Review cancellation, postponement and refund information before purchasing. If a policy is unclear, ask the organizer. Keep your confirmation and any entry instructions somewhere you can find them on the day.

The Competition Bureau advises ticket buyers to check event and ticket details, research sellers and retain receipts. Its guidance also identifies pressure to pay immediately and unusual payment requests as warning signs. These are general precautions, not a guarantee about any individual listing.
